Western Montana's Glacier Country is committed to promoting awareness and the necessity of Recreating Responsibly. Our program has two audiences—consumers and Montana business partners.

Consumer Messaging

Over the past few years, and in conjunction with our Destination Stewardship Plan, our consumer Recreate Responsibly messaging includes information on Know Before You Go, Play It Safe, Explore Mindfully, Keep Our Waters Clean, Leave No Trace, Tread Lightly, Follow Fire Safety, Be Wildlife Wise, Respectful Tribal Lands. You will find this information on a dedicated webpage at RecreateResponsiblyMT.com but also embedded into all aspects of our work, including marketing and visitor outreach, to align sustainability goals across all touchpoints. 

Montana Business Partners

For Montana Businesses, Western Montana's Glacier Country has created a wholistic program with materials to put in your place of business and programs to help educate you and your staff on Recreating Responsibly. Working with communities, and both public and private partners, and in conjunction with our Destination Stewardship program, we’ve identified nine key recreate responsibly principles. These principles promote responsible tourism and encourage sustainability preserving Western Montana’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and quality of life. 

  • Know Before You Go: Plan ahead, be prepared check roads and weather. 
  • Play It Safe: Pack the right gear. Know your physical limitations. Learn avalanche and water safety. 
  • Explore Mindfully: Be thoughtful and aware and respect others. 
  • Keep Our Waters Clean: Prevent aquatic invasive species with Clean. Drain. Dry. Steps and watercraft inspections. 
  • Leave No Trace: Minimize your impact and leave spaces better than you found them. 
  • Tread Lightly: Take care of our trails and waters by staying in designated areas. 
  • Follow Fire Safety: Help prevent wildland fires with campfire safety, and check fire restrictions.  
  • Be Wildlife Wise: Act responsibly around wild animals. Keep your distance. Carry bear spray. 
  • Respect Tribal Lands: Be considerate, know tribal policies and secure tribal conservation permits.
